What is Quartzite?
Quartzite is a natural material that begins as sandstone, a sedimentary rock made primarily of tiny quartz(sand) grains. These accumulate and compact over millions of years in beaches, deserts and riverbeds. Over time, heat and pressure fuse the sandstone grains together through heat and pressure to form Quartzite.
The result is a surface that presents a marblelike appearance, but is much harder.
Quartzites are often harder than many granites.
Not to be mistaken for Quartz, a man made, engineered product.
Quartzite typically comes in whites, grays, and cream/beige colors often with flowing veins and sometimes a crystal kind of sparkle. Each slab is unique.
This makes Quartzite a good option for someone seeking the look of marble because of its hardness and durability. It is harder than marble many granites making it very scratch resistant. Quartzite is also more heat resistant than manmade Quartz. It is also UV light resistant, making it suitable for outdoor kitchens or spaces with lots of sunlight.
It is recommended to reseal Quartzite on an annual basis.
Tip on searching for quartzite: Make sure the stone is a true quartzite. There are hard marbles out there that may be marketed as a quartzite. Even a hard marble is much softer than a Quartzite. Consult with your fabricator before making any commitment.
Price point: Generally, more than granite or quartz. Due to the unique nature of this stone, more time is required to extract blocks during quarrying. Processing in the fabrication shop is also more time consuming.
